Study of a Raven

Size: 9 x 12 inches
Medium: Acrylic
Support: Gessoed Board

It's always a big challenge for me to paint birds. In this painting, I tried to learn about different types of feathers a raven has and how to depict the iridescent shine. It's not perfect, but turned out to be a handsome portrait, I think.

Beautiful work Akiko, black creatures are never easy to do, but you have got this spot on with all the tones.

Akiko, this Raven looks very confident the way his head and beak are tilted upward.
Sometimes I wonder what you define "not perfect" as. If you mean it can't breathe and fly away. I understand... but if you are speaking artistically I can see nothing wrong with it- not one thing.

Maybe you need your vision checked?

Alice, my "not perfect" usually means "not as I imagined in my head and need more work and skills to get to that imaginary goal." Simply put, my paintings are not as beautiful as my subjects really are. One of the important ingredients of my imaginary beauty is individuality, such as different markings, scars, and behaviors that distinguish one animal from any other even in the same species. Art is a great tool to express my feelings and thoughts, but it is not that easy for me to achieve that, so I keep painting. Besides, it's FUN!
Talking about my vision... I need a new pair of glasses. I've been postponing it.
Alice, thanks for your comments. I really appreciate it!

Gail, thanks for your compliments on my new raven painting and collecting my Treasure Seeker series! Your white raven painting inspires me to do white ones, but I know it will be a tough one; still thinking about it though.

What Raven/Crow/blackbird collector wouldn't snag this? It's nothing short of PERFECT as always! Love the palette you used, very simple and effective. Gimmie some of your patience for details please!

Erika, hopefully this one will attract a raven collector or two. I'm currently working on another raven, which I had the idea in my head for a very long time. Will show it here when it's done.
Thanks for checking my paintings!
