Cali's Stare

Size: 6 x 6 inches
Medium: Acrylic
Support: Ampersand Gessobord
Sold

This is Cali. She has such an intense stare. When we got Cali 14 years ago, she was very pregnant. A few days later, she gave birth to four kittens. My husband and I decided to find homes for three and keep one with Cali because we read that it was very traumatic for a mother to be separated from all of her babies. We totally agree; there is no question about that.

The one we kept is Hunter. Yes the one in the painting "My Precious Hunter" below.

Akiko you make my jaw drop every single time I see your painting. And now I own an original and it's of ME thank you!

This is another amazing piece Akiko! I am now engaging in a staring contest with Cali. Please root for me.

The eyes are so mesmerizing. This is incredible, Akiko! And such a wonderful story to go with it. :-)

Both Cali and Hunter are beautiful! And the Jefferson Memorial is amazing! It has a very Edward Hopper sensibility. Kudos!

Amazingly beautiful and sensitive work, as always you really deliver great art. Lindax

Gail, thank you. Cali is a loner, but let only Hunter clean herself.

Erika thank you for your compliments! I don't think you can defeat Cali in the staring contest; she can stare without a blink for quite some time. Actually, all cats are like that. lol

Kathleen thanks! Cali does have beautiful eyes.

Okay... I just finished picking up my jaw that dropped next to Erika's. I know I asked this before but my brain is in shock now. What size brush do you use? Or did you find Hunter's or Cali's fallen whisker to paint this? The eyes are AWESOME and I love the way you painted the nose to give it that moist and slightly bumpy texture every cat lover knows and loves.

AKIKO, OH YEs You are the Queen about your animals. Spectacular piece.
I think what I like too is the great composition you gave it. Her eyes are perfect. I realize you have her there but do your work from a picture of her ?

artbyakiko said...

Sheila, there are comb brushes that come in different sizes and shapes. These are great for doing animal hairs. You should try them if you haven't. Using whiskers sounds an interesting idea...

Dominique, thanks for such wonderful comments! I do work from pictures. Only time our cats stay still for me is when they are sleeping, which they do about 20 hours a day. lol

Fantastic and amazing are 2 words that just POPPED out of my mouth the moment your blog came up!!! Cali is beautiful - all of her, and especially her eyes. The detail is superb - I love the little bit of chin/lip we can see, how you showed the change in direction of the fur... you are a masterful artist, Akiko!

Akiko, I have four cats so I know this expression/stare very well. You have an excellent skill at capturing the expression and feeling of these animals. In awe... D.

Akiko, I can only echo all the wonderful comments by everyone else. The eyes are truly remarkable and there is such a sense of emotion, even though that is something cats are not really known for. So beautiful!

Another awesome cat Akiko! Your mastery of those small details is incredible - I am amazed ( ok, and rather envious of your talent) every time I see your work!

Akiko, you are very kind to compliment my miniatures, but it is me who is urgently trying to catch up to you with these gorgeous cats of yours! There is so much beautiful detail in Cali and Hunter's portraits.

I admire all these ACEOs you are doing and it's a natural transition to enter miniature competitions too. If you haven't already entered, I feel your work would be very well-received in miniature shows, and I hope to see you in the MASF show next year! Have added your blog link to the list on my blog.

Mona, thank you for your kind remarks on my Kali and Hunter paintings. I have never attempted to enter miniature competitions before because I need to get better first. ;) Maybe I will try this year.

I would love to have a tenth of your power to portray the personality (soul?) of each individual cat. I like your Lincoln Memorial, too. I'll probably direct folks to your blog from my next post, I hope that's OK. You are amazing. And, yes, I'm a cat (and all animal) lover!
